case study:
Riverside Medical Center
Pavilion Building
Kankakee, IL
Challenges
Jensen & Halstead was presented with the following challenge by Kankakee’s
Riverside Medical Center – allow patients, visitors and staff to utilize
parking, which, due to the expansion of Highway 113, would be separated
from the main entrance of the hospital by five lanes of traffic.
Solutions
Our response was the Riverside Pavilion, which used three architectural
elements to enhance the patient experience while alleviating parking
and safety concerns.
First, we designed a two-story atrium, which now serves as the new
main hospital entrance. Inviting and serene, it contains a prominent
reception desk, a gentle flowing fountain that features a “Healing Hands”
sculpture, a grand piano and coffee bar to promote a “community center”
atmosphere.
Escalators, stairs and elevators provide access to the second architectural
element, the Pedestrian Bridge, which allows for safe passage across
the highway into the main hospital.
The third element, a six-story office building, is the new aesthetic
centerpiece of the campus. Riverside’s Outpatient and Women’s Centers
make up the first floor, providing convenient access for outpatients
who no longer have to travel within the main hospital.
